The Athenaeum in Bucharest was built in 1886 on what was initially supposed to be a circus foundation, therefore the shape of the building. Inspired by Greek temples, the edifice features Doric columns, balconies at the intermediary floor and circular interior stairs made of pink Carrara marble.
The overall style of this construction is neo-classic/eclectic.
The interior stairs connect the main hall to the annexes (offices, rehearsal room, artists cabins).
The layout of the seats resembles the Greco-roman amphitheaters - three areas on the first floor and two circular rows with 52 lodges (a main lodge at the center), all offer perfect visibility and impeccable acoustics.
The dome-shaped ceiling is ornamented with gold-plated motifs inspired by traditional tales.
